A Lithuanian Temporary Residence Permit is the document, issued to a citizen of the non-EU country, which gives you opportunities to immigrate, live and work in Lithuania and Schengen area countries, during the entire time of the document validity. There are several ways to obtain a residence permit in Lithuania for a foreign persons. Currently the best options to acquire a residence permit in Lithuania are via employment or business immigration to Lithuania. In both of these options, at first applicant is eligible to apply for 1 year Lithuanian national visa (migration visa).

To obtain residence permit in Lithuania

Application for the issuance of the temporary residence permit and other documents is submitted to the Migration Department or Diplomatic Mission or Consular Post depending on the grounds for issuance. Document copies and documents issued by foreign states (except for the passport) must be legalized ( certified twice or certified with an Apostille ) and translated into the Lithuanian language.

A foreigner’s application for the issuance of the temporary residence permit must be considered not later than within 4 months from the lodging of the application, and if applied on an urgent basis – not later than within 2 months from the date of submission of the application. Once the application for a residence permit has been made, a stamped copy of the application is issued.

Bringing your family to Lithuania with you?

Family members of the applicant who has legally been in Lithuania and has a valid residence permit, may apply for a family member reunion visa and temporary residence permit. In this case your spouse and minor children (under 18) will obtain a residence permit for the same period which your residence permit card is given for and will immigrate to Lithuania together with you. (For example, spouse, common law partner, and dependents, including children under 18 and parents over 65) to join you in Lithuania.

Usually, if a person has already a TRP and works in a Lithuanian company or has its own savings in the bank account it is enough to show for Lithuanian Migration Department. Moreover, the family can also arrive and visit the family member, with visitor visa.

If you want to apply at the same time with a family member who is of legal age, it is recommended to follow the steps of company creation and employment but for more than one applicant, which would mean that your documents would be processed simultaneously and you would be eligible to travel together.

Residence permit renewal in Lithuania

At the termination of that period (at least, 2-4 months before the end of the current existing Lithuanian Temporary Residence Permit) you are required to refer to the Migration Department of Lithuania for the Residence Permit renewal / extension.
